About Aya

Stress is killing us. An article titled “Why Your Workplace Might Be Killing You!” expounds on a new research study conducted by two Stanford professors and a third at Harvard Business School. They conducted a meta-analysis of 228 studies examining ten workplace stressors that can adversely influence a person’s health. [SNP1] The research found that workplace stressors account for 120,000 deaths annually and are responsible for $190 billion in healthcare costs. These stressors include:

·        Job insecurity

·        Lack of work-life balance

·        Long working hours

Long working hours alone increased mortality by 20%. Stefanos Zenios, a Stanford professor, asserts that “the deaths are comparable to the fourth- and fifth-largest causes of death in the country – heart disease and accidents… It is more than deaths from diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or influenza [3].”

Stress on the job has both physical and psychological repercussions. The researchers were shocked by the unfortunate side effect of psychological stressors. Employees who felt unable to strike a work-life balance were 90% more likely to report poor physical health. And those who perceived or experienced injustice at the workplace were 50% more likely to be diagnosed with a medical condition. “It costs more to remediate the effects of toxic workplaces than it does to prevent their ill effects in the first place, “says Jeffrey Pfeffer, a Stanford professor of organizational behavior [2].

Leadership stress statistics

A review of the leading statistics for 2022 reported that “a staggering 79% of employees will resign after receiving inadequate appreciation from their managers. (In addition, 69% of millennials are concerned that their workplace does not develop their leadership skills. Leadership stress statistics of 2022 show that “stress in leadership can have a negative impact on a company’s bottom line.” Leadership stress costs the US $300 billion annually [1].

A recent study surveyed 2000 professionals and established the following:

·        76% of participants reported that work stress had negatively impacted the quality of their relationships.

·        66% disclosed losing sleep because of work stress.

·        16% said they had to leave their jobs due to stress.

However, it is not too late to arrest the brain drain and seal the million-dollar leak in your organization. Emotional resilience and leadership development coaching and training are the keys to creating a healthy organizational culture that attracts and keeps your top winners, innovators, and problem solvers.

A powerful story of transformation

Last week I attended a webinar by Dr. Dickens, a licensed psychologist. He shared how coming in contact with the teaching of the nature of human experience understanding changed his life. “I worked on myself all but four hours a day,” he recalled. From 12 am to 4 am, he slept for four hours every night, then meditated and journaled his dreams after waking up. He tried different techniques, including scream therapy, pounding pillows, and Gestalt therapy, and meditated for many hours every day. He journaled his dreams; sometimes, he wrote out five dreams per night and would spend time reflecting, improving, and reframing them. He explained that there are more than four hundred and fifty theories in psychology, and they are all based on the assumption that we are broken and need fixing. He worked very hard on himself, believing that his well-being was something he needed to attain. Once he understood how his human experience was created and realized that his innate well-being lay within, his life changed forever. Now he enjoys living with calm and clarity without dedicating countless hours to fixing himself. Hence, he had plenty of time to spend with his family and do what he loved.

Pause To Reflect

·        On a scale of 1 to 10, where is your stress level right now?

·        If you do nothing about it, where do you see your stress levels a year from now? How about five years?

·        Where do you feel the stress in your body? Shoulders? Chest? Belly?

·        Are you ready to face each day, or is it tough to roll out of bed?

·        What must you let go of to have a high-performance stress-free life?
