This article is the first in a series that discusses the critical components of outstanding leadership. That aims to empower you to navigate your work and family life from a state of well-being. The pure and simple wisdom contained within may transform your understanding of the world within and revolutionize your view of the world without. The reported side effects of understanding and internalizing this wisdom include:
- Subtraction of suffering.
- Spontaneous resilience.
- Worry-free success.
What does it mean to lead from the inside out?
Leading from the inside out means being true to yourself and leading from a place of wholeness and authenticity. Thus, demonstrating your passions and sharing your strengths and interests in all aspects of your life. It is a whole-person approach acknowledging that we are not separate individuals at home and work. As you reawaken your innate well-being from the inside out, you create harmony between work and home.
Most approaches to resilience aim to instill competency and resilience from the outside using techniques such as positive affirmations, positive behavior support, and mindfulness-based interventions. While beneficial, they seem to fall short of recognizing our built-in resilience system. Instead, they have based their strategies on the hypothesis that the human capacity for resilience is not inherent but the byproduct of diverse external determinants, genetic factors, personal qualities, social conditioning, and management strategies. Furthermore, it is based on the assumption that we are somehow broken and need fixing.
The nature of experience-based understanding affirms our innate resilience. Additionally, it uses our internal guide assistant as a source of clarity to help us navigate work and family life from a state of well-being.
Why lead from the inside out?
I put this series together for several reasons:
Reason # 1:
We live in a crazy, turbulent, frenzied, uncertain, and ever-changing world. Many leaders lead from a place of fear and overwhelm. They are stretched too thin and unable to meet the demands of leadership. Many leaders are either “working at home” or “living at work.”
Leading with emotional resilience boosts a leader’s effectiveness and compassion for others in any crisis. A core competency for leadership in a complex world is when a leader taps into their own resilience and raises their level of meaning-making capacity
Reason # 2:
Leaders tend to bear the brunt of any crisis, supporting their team through the ongoing strains and stresses of the day. Unfortunately, some get stuck in “overworking” mode, with the boundary between work and home fading as they near burnout due to a lack of self-care practices and sustained sleep deprivation.
Reason # 3:
The opposite extreme is the leader who is “underworking” and cannot balance work and family life demands. They feel pulled in multiple directions and cannot meet ever-growing needs and expectations. They may be just as burnt out and emotionally unavailable to their team.
Reason # 4:
For many leaders, the workplace atmosphere is tense and uncertain, hostile and territorial, and filled with fear. They are unsure how to navigate change and uncertainty without feeling angry or abandoned. The working hours have gone from bad to worse.
Reason # 5:
Recent years have seen drastic changes in organizational structure. In organizations, the traditional hierarchy with senior executives creating the most impact is replaced by a flatter structure where many individuals are involved in innovation and leadership.
I want to empower you to change that. There are three components for leadership development. They are the building blocks of outstanding leadership. They are:
1. Emotional resilience- a foundation of emotional wellness is essential for competent leadership.
2. Adult development- raising leaders’ meaning-making capacity to navigate the complex changing environment. As they rise in their level of consciousness, leaders can step away from the ‘dance floor’ and stand on the ‘balcony,’ which will help them see the ‘big picture.’
3. Worldview shift happens when we understand how we create our reality from the inside out.
Emotional resilience and leadership development are your tickets to:
- Free your mind.
- Unlock your potential.
- Actualize effortless success.
Pause and reflect:
- How do you keep it together when everything is falling apart?
- How can you stay balanced on a tightrope?
