Are we helpless victims of our human nature and situational factors?

How much free will do we really have?

🗝️You can drive away abundance by engaging in or allowing the six faces of evil leadership. This article explores evil as a choice.

A choice is always present with all of the aforementioned faces of evil. Coming evil or good is a gradual process composed of small incremental steps. Scholar C.S. Lewis uses the metaphor of a bifurcated road. He portrays life as a journey composed of a series of bifurcations; we either move toward good or evil with each decision. (Lewis, 1946)

“I do not think that all who choose the wrong roads perish, but their rescue consists in being put back on the right road.” Thus, there is no such thing as being neutral. We are always moving in one direction or the opposite. Lewis argues that we must go back to find the error and make amends that evil can be undone because simply ‘going on’ is not an option.

Johnson then argues that “only those who are very good or very bad do not have a choice; the rest of us do. However, each choice we make reduces our options.” I see life as a test of deciding between good and evil. Hence, there is no such thing as being too good or bad because change is the only constant in life. Therefore, we always have the choice to turn back and choose a different path because every moment and every breath we take is a chance to do better and better. Hence, no choice can “reduce our options,”. Although once a specific thought or behavior pattern has become habitual, it may seem more challenging to change it. In reality, it only takes a mindset shift to realize humans are inherently good. We all live in a state of well-being unless we cover it up with bad choices.

Human beings are not free to choose many things. We cannot choose our parents; we cannot choose to live forever; we cannot choose to live without drinking. But we can choose between good and evil. Life is about options, decisions, and situations to choose from; good and evil are in front of us as options. War is the best example of what happens when leaders make a series of evil traces and cause much pain and suffering to the masses. This brings to mind a story I heard from one of my mentors about an alcoholic father who raised two twin boys. One became an alcoholic, and when asked why, he said, “my father was an alcoholic.” The other grew up, became a teetotaler, and never drank in his life. When asked why he said, ‘my father was an alcoholic.” The same dad, two boys, two very different perspectives.“Your perspective in life will determine your destination.” Kirk Franklin.

How can leaders conquer evil as a choice?

Shift happens whenever you let go of that which no longer serves you. In truth, every evil choice is an allurement to stray from homeless to lack, love to fear. It is a sign of inner turmoil. Thus, whenever you are tempted to do “evil affirm, I always have a choice.” This way, you will have peace instead of pain. Evil is a choice to recognize the responsibility we bear for our choices. At every turn, we face the ethical dilemma of resisting or surrendering situational, group, and organizational pressures.
