Would you like to attract more abundance into your life?
Did you know that you can be anti-abundance? So how can one repel abundance?
The previous article explored the concept of moral exclusion as an evil that can drive away abundance, fulfillment, and joy. Several definitions of moral exclusion were described, together with the psychology and the symptoms of moral exclusion. Moral exclusion is about drawing a mental circle where people within the circle are considered to be the moral community that is worthy of sacrifice, respectful treatment, and their fair share of resources. And anyone designated as an out-group member is considered unworthy and expendable. The following passage discusses a Hideous example of moral exclusion, along with four steps for conquering this evil.
A Poignant Case of Moral Exclusion
The evil of moral exclusion brings to mind a story that had etched a place in my memory As I heard when I was a child. I remember being dumbfounded and overwhelmed by dreadful feelings of fear and confusion. It was a story from the Quran which relates the tragic tale of the persecution of the Christians of Najran, a city on the border of Yemen and Saudi Arabia. This incident occurred around 524 CE. The king of that land was an idol worshiper who tortured the believers to force them to renounce their faith. They are described as the people of the ditch (ashab al-ukhdud) Because they burned the Christians to death by casting them into pits full of fire, including women and children! The story ends by announcing the fate of both groups. The tyrants are warned of a grave punishment, and the oppressed believers are promised a great reward in paradise. This scene is an extreme form of moral exclusion where evil leaders commit atrocities to assert their power over their subordinates.
How can leaders conquer this evil?
Dealing with exclusion is not always easy because it is subtle and difficult to identify. The following are simple steps to come to grips with this evil:
- The first step is to be aware of and recognize the symptoms of moral exclusion. Pay attention to the language used by group members, both verbal and body language, especially negative comments, derogatory labels, and unflattering comparisons. Those who engage in more exclusion tend to rebuff any accusations or allusions to their exclusionary behavior.
- Moral inclusion is where everyone is integrated into a larger moral entity and seen as deserving of dignity, justice, and their fair share of resources and opportunities. Johnson advocates leaders and group members to be “skeptical of self-serving claims and moral justifications of destructive behavior.”
- Leaders must promote a positive organizational culture that celebrates diversity and shuns the ‘us’ versus ‘them’ competitive mentality that embraces differences of sentiment and opinion.
- Encourage leaders and followers to adopt a growth mindset where challenges to identity is seen as a growth opportunity that broadens their worldview. As the individual and collective worldview expand, groups, teams and organizations respond from wisdom rather than react from ego inclusion becomes the norm.
“With wisdom, people see beyond the filters and biases of race and culture to realize the beauty in everyone. Such understanding enables people to stop fearing interest and distrusting those who are different, to see the commonality but human beings regardless of cultural differences.” Sydney Banks
